“Hiiragi Iwashi” – Sardine and Holly Charm
節分厄除け　柊鰯（ひいらぎいわし）

In Japan, 3rd February is known as Setsubun – division of the seasons, and is believed to bring forth evil spirits such as ogres and demons.
It is said that demons dislike the spikes of holly leaves and the distinctive smell of roasted sardines, and the “Hiiragi Iwashi” – Sardine and Holly Charm is decorated on the entrance door on the day to ward off evil spirits so that they would not enter homes.
The custom of decorating with “Hiiragi Iwashi” still remains in western Japan, especially in Nara Prefecture, and in the Kanto region including Fukushima Prefecture.

東洋では、季節の変わり目である節分には鬼や魔物といった邪気が生じると考えられてきました。
鬼は柊の葉っぱのトゲといわしを焼いた独特な臭いを嫌うといわれており、「鬼（邪気）」が家に入ってこないよう魔除けの意味を込めて節分に柊鰯を飾るようになったとされています。
奈良県内を中心とした西日本や福島県を含む関東地方などでは、節分に柊鰯を飾る風習が現在でも残っています。
